Ana Maria Caballero’s 'Fifty Ways of Looking at a Poem' is acquired by a major private collector, setting an all-time high for the artist.
The acquisition consists of the original physical poems, hand-annotated by 50 different people, plus a durational performance in which Caballero hung each poem from a clothing line, representing the act of accessing the transcendental through the mundane, a recurring theme in her work.
The collector looks to work with Caballero and the Francisco Carolinum in Linz on a presentation of the series at the museum, slated for September 2026 during Ars Electronica. They are also interested in finding a long-term exhibition space for the works via loan.
Via Ana Maria Caballero:
“Many of these poems were created during Bright Moments Venice, when I walked around with the nerdiest black folder imaginable, asking people to please mark up one of my poems.
The collection includes hand-annotated poems by Iskra Velitchkova, Ania Catherine, Sam Spratt, Erick Calderon, and many more.
I always dreamed of placing these works with a patron able to recognize that they represent a special moment in time, when an intrepid group of artists, collectors and curators took matters (and pencils) into their very own hands.”
Meanwhile, the two last available editions of her artist book, 'Ropa sucia (The Wash)' are acquired, with the final work going to MrMerge.
Via MrMerge:
“Ana Maria Caballero effortlessly weaves digital, physical, and performance art into a singular, boundary-pushing body of work. Her work defies categorization and sets a new standard for what poetry and art can be in the digital age. Ana is a true pioneer of the new digital medium, and I couldn’t be happier to add Ropa sucia (The Wash) to my collection.”
